How do I choose a Neurofeedback Therapist?

This is an important decision which should be based upon trust, competence and good communication.  While there are never guarantees of quality in mental health or medicine there are some guidelines you can follow. The peson should be licensed as a mental health or medical healthcare provider, be experienced in treating the disorder you are seeking help for, been supervised by a senior clinician(s) in the field of Neurofeedback or EEG Biofeedback, and certified by the Biofeeback Certification International Alliance (formerly Biofeedback Certification Institute of America-BCIA).  BCIA is the only organization internationally recognized, recognized by insurance companies as the certifying agency for certification and recognized by other professional organizations in the field to issue Board Certification in Neurofeedback. CLICK ON THIS LINK TO LEARN MORE:www.bcia.org/displaycommon.cfm

What is an EEG?
EEG stands for electroencephalogram. It is the application of wires (electrodes) on the scalp to record the electrical activity of the brain. It is the gold standard which measures the electrical activity of the brain. It has been around since 1929, is performed all over the world in a standardized manner. It is performed under certain conditions, for example, eyes open, eyes closed, hyperventilation. Sometimes methods to activate or stress the brain are performed such as reading or listening.
It is used to evaluate any condition of the brain that involves disorders of memory, thinking, epilepsy/seizures, traumatic brain injury, ADD, ADHD, and other disorders of behavior. Doctors learn how to read them by learning from other expert doctors, mostly neurologists. It is read by a visual inspection of the brain waves.
One of the criticisms of this visual inspection is the variability between different readers for the same tracing. This variability is greatly overcome by a computerized analysis of the raw EEG called QEEG, or quantitative EEG. QEEG is a more specific and scientific analysis of the EEG, and will be addressed in another section on this site.
What is a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG)? How does this help me?
A QEEG is an EEG that is statistically compared to a database of individuals of the same age who are free of brain injury or brain disease. Only the QEEG gives your treating provider information that becomes the basis of your individualized treatment plan. It gives us specific information about which sites and frequencies to train in Neurofeedback. It also may assist in helping your doctor prescribe medication/supplements.

How does Integrative Neurology help me? What kind of alternative neurology approaches are available?
It allows for a treatment plan that traditional Neurology does not provide for. For example, vitamins and supplements are used to treat different problems, which otherwise could not be addressed in traditional Neurology. Other alternative treatments include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and acupuncture.

I am a man or woman who has been diagnosed or is suspected to have a diagnosis of menopause (women) or andropause (men). How will Bioidentical Hormone Supplementation assist me in maintaining youthful hormone levels?
Bioidentical hormmone replacement therapy is a very safe and effective way to restore hormones to youthfull levels, without the serious complications of tradition HRT. Since the type of hormones that are used are actually identical to the original ones produced by the body, it is not hermful to the person. Typically, three different hormones (Estrogen progesterone, and testosterone) are taken either as a topical preparation (gel, cream), or as a sublingual pill (lozenge or troche).

My child/family member is living with Autism, ADD, ADHD, a brain injury, and/or seizures. How does Integrative Neurology help?
Integrative Neurology sees the patient as a whole person, not as a disease. Each patient undergoes comprehensive testing to properly diagnose their condition. After proper diagnosis, specific treatments are recommended. For example, for detoxification the emphasis is on using different supplements and a specific diet as opposed to pharmaceuticals. This approach maximizes the benefits and minimizes the side effects.

My child/family member is living with Autism, ADD, ADHD, a brain injury, and/or seizures. How does Neurofeedback help?
All of these disorders are simply different ways of the brain expressing some kind of imbalance or poor communication. Neurofeedback can assist the patient in retraining the way in which different parts of the brain communicate with each other. This can involve changing the strength of the brain waves (amplitude), the balance between the sites (asymmetry), or the time two sites spend communicating with each other. Generally symptoms are the result of one or more of these factors not being normal. We emphasize combining this with a thorough biomedical evaluation and treatment so that the brain has sufficient amounts of oxygen and nutrients to respond to this training.
